Where’s Quebec sovereignty now?
On Jan. 11, 2001, the popular premier stunned Quebec by conceding failure in his political quest and declared, in his retirement announcement, that it was time for someone else to take up the challenge.
It’s been a bumpy ride since. The Parti Quebecois has suffered three election defeats and not voiced any concrete plans to hold another sovereignty referendum.
“It’s dormant but you can never dismiss the possibility of the arrival upon the scene of some galvanizing issue or character,” said Pierre Martin, a political scientist at the Universite de Montreal.
